Mango Tree nursery was started by an incredible lady called Anna Davidson, who lives in Cape Maclear, under her charity The Malama Trust.
When Charlie first visited it was a wooden shack structure with two classrooms that the teachers themselves could barely stand-up in. If they did stand up, their heads were likely to poke out the bin bag roof.
The teachers were doing an amazing job with very few resources.
When Charlie returned home, he promised he would be back. And true to his word, he visited Malawi during all his university holidays whilst training to be a primary school teacher. On each trip he took books and educational resources.
His first goal in Malawi was to replace the reed shack at Mango Tree with a brick built nursery for the children.
In late 2017, the fundraising through Changing Stars was complete and we were able to start building a brick-built structure for 2 classrooms.
It is a purpose-built classroom with half height walls for the children to see over whilst learning and be able to reach out to their teachers. There is also a multi-height roof to enhance airflow with fans attached to the ceiling to keep the children cool all year round.
Through the generous donation of one family we were also able to build a toilet block with flushing toilets for the children to use next to the grass garden for them to play in.
Mango Tree's new home was funded by donations through Changing Stars and is one of our proudest achievements.
We have also managed to achieve the following:
From 2017 we have brought multiple trips to Malawi with nursery practitioners (funded by Children’s Corner Childcare, and other teachers from the UK) to share their expertise with our Malawian teachers.
Could you be the next volunteer to volunteer in our Nurseries in Malawi?
