Chitsanzo Primary School

Chitsanzo Primary School provides education for young learners in Malawi
Chitsanzo is a small primary school just 1km from the public primary school in the community at Cape Maclear. It was set up in 2013 by a public school teacher, Mathias Raphael, who saw that the public school needed help to reduce class sizes of up to 140 pupils. Mathias began his own school with just three pupils under a tree and has slowly been building the school ever since.

How it began

In 2017, when Charlie and Changing Stars Malawi were first introduced to Chitsanzo Primary School, there were 4 complete classrooms, 6 wooden shack classrooms and 4 classes being taught under nearby trees.

By the end of 2021 we had helped to fund the building of 6 more brick-built classrooms, two toilet blocks and an entire campus wall to help keep the children safe whilst attending school.

We have also provided a bore hole for the school so that students have access to clean water.

Chitsanzo progress

In addition to building the classrooms we have assisted Chitsanzo with teacher training to retain teachers for longer periods, and bought hundreds of curriculum books for both the children and teachers. Without these curriculum books the day-to-day teaching is incredible hard due to the rigid teaching system in Malawi, so these are essential to maintain.

We have also been able to assist with the purchase land next to the school site, which is for future classrooms to be built on, a football pitch and netball pitches.

Many of our sponsored children are attending Chitsanzo and benefitting from our support.

Completion of project

Chitsanzo is providing a good quality education and it has been recognised for its results within the region it sits within Malawi.

Our ethos is always to work with partners in Malawi to get them to a sustainable position so that they can then support themselves.

In 2024 we reached this milestone and we will now move onto other projects who need our help.

Certainly we are leaving Chitsanzo in a much better position than it was before Changing Stars started to assist the school, though it has grown in popularity with its results too.

Our impact, through donations,  has been immense and we are proud to have helped the school get to where it is now.

We now wish the school, its students and its Principle, Mr Matthias Raphael, all the very best in the future.
