Chitsanzo Primary School

Our Work So Far

Chitsanzo is a small primary school just 1km from the public primary school in the community at Cape Maclear. It was set up in 2013 by a public school teacher, Mathias Raphael, who saw that the public school needed help to reduce class sizes of up to 140 pupils. Mathias began his own school with just three pupils under a tree and has slowly been building the school ever since.

In 2017 when Changing Stars Malawi first came across Chitsanzo Primary School there were 4 complete classrooms, 6 wooden shack classrooms and 4 classes being taught under nearby trees. At the end of 2021 we have assisted with the building of 6 more brick-built classrooms, two toilet blocks and an entire campus wall to help keep the children safe whilst attending school.

Chitsanzo helps not only the pupils at the school itself by keeping class sizes to a maximum of 40 children, but every child that attends is one less child for the public primary school of Cape Maclear to cope with.

In addition to building the additional classrooms we have assisted Chitsanzo with teacher fees to retain teachers for longer periods and bought hundreds of curriculum books for both the children and teachers. Without these curriculum books the day-to-day teaching is incredible hard due to the rigid teaching system in Malawi, so these are essential to maintain. We have also been able to purchase land next to the school site, which is for future classrooms to be built on, a football pitch and netball pitches.

Chitsanzo is providing such a high-quality education in 2021 that it has been recognised within the region it sits within Malawi. It is the school that we send most of the children that we sponsor to because of such high results and is a school we look forward to continuing to support.
